Abstract
Background: The most prevalent soft tissue sarcoma in the retroperitoneum is liposarcoma. Although retroperitoneal sarcoma (RPS) is a rare disease, any general surgeon may be able to identify and treat it. Retroperitoneal liposarcoma (RPLS) is the most prevalent histological subtype of RPS, accounting for around 30% of all RPS cases. Surgical resection is the conventional treatment for RPLS, and radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy is often used as a neoadjuvant treatment. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy have been demonstrated to be useful in the treatment of extremity soft tissue sarcoma. However, the positive effects of these therapy for RPS remain debatable. Nonetheless, some studies have found that chemotherapy or chemoradiotherapy had a significant tumour suppressing impact in RPLS patients. Methods: In this paper, we present a rare instance of dedifferentiated retroperitoneal liposarcoma. Conclusion: Dedifferentiated liposarcomas should be treated with radical surgical excision, with multi-visceral resection if necessary. In patients who present with non-specific abdominal symptoms, a high index of suspicion for RPS should be maintained. Surgery is still the gold standard for treating intra-abdominal liposarcomas.
