IMMUNOEXPRESSION OF NSE AND GFAP IN UMBILICAL CORD IN FETAL GROWTH RESTRICTION

Abstract
Introduction: IUGR/SGA is the result of a variety of etiologies, including maternal, placental, and foetal factors, as well as recently added genetic variables. Neuronal markers are elevated due to brain damage in FGR. Material and methods: samples were divided into cases (50) and controls (50). Umbilical cord tissue was fixed and paraffin blocks were made. Tissues were sectioned and IHC protocols were followed as per instruction specific for NSE and GFAP. This reading was done by two pathologists by double blinding. Results: in normal cord neither NSE nor GFAP were observed. In FGR expression of NSE was more when compared to GFAP which showed mild reaction. Conclusion: NSE is good marker to detect neuronal damage when compared to GFAP. Both markers showed positive reaction in FGR only.
