Abstract

Abstract Background: Pneumonia is the most common cause of childhood morbidity and mortality in developing countries, especially in those younger than 5 years of age. This study was conducted to evaluate the clinical and etiological profile of persistent pneumonia to evaluate immediate outcome of Persistent Pneumonia in these children.
Materials and Methods: 59 hospitalized children with persistent pneumonia were evaluated for clinical and etiological profile and its immediate outcome.
Results: Out of 59 children, In the present study, among the study population, GERD was the most common cause of persistent pneumonia (18.64%), followed by Tuberculosis (16.95%), CMV pneumonia (13.56%). Congenital heart disease was present in 10.17%,HIV in 8.47%, Floppy infant syndrome in 6.78%. Auto immune diseases, Gram negative infestations, bronchiectasis was contributed by 5.08% each. 3.39% each was contributed by CCAM, FB aspiration. 1.69% was contributed by cystic lung and interstitial lung disease.As far as the clinical profile was concerned, out of 59 children, Cough and respiratory distress was present among all the patients. Fever was present in 86.44%, weight loss in 52.54%, nasal regurgitation in 22.03%. SRS cycle and diarrhea was present in 10.17%.
Conclusions: The common underlying etiologies of persistent pneumonia in children found in our study were aspiration syndromes followed by pulmonary tuberculosis, congenital heart disease (CHD), immunodeficiency and bronchiectasis.
