IMPACT OF AGRICULTURAL RUNOFF ON SURFACE WATER QUALITY: A CASE STUDY

Abstract
Agricultural runoff is a leading cause of surface water quality degradation, driven by excessive nutrient loading, sedimentation, and agrochemical pollution. This paper investigates the influence of agricultural practices on water bodies, emphasizing how fertilizers, pesticides, and soil erosion contribute to ecological imbalance and public health concerns. A case study approach highlights water quality changes in a rural watershed, presenting comprehensive data on pollutants and their effects. Results show significant increases in nitrate, phosphate, and pesticide concentrations, alongside deteriorating aquatic ecosystem health. Strategies such as buffer zones, integrated watershed management, and sustainable farming practices are proposed as solutions.
