LOCUS OF CONTROL AND MARITAL SATISFACTION AMONG NURSING PROFESSIONALS: MODERATING ROLE OF EMOTIONAL EXPRESSIVENESS

Abstract
In this study, we investigated the relationship between locus of control (LOC) and marital satisfaction (MAS) of nursing professionals’ level of emotional expressiveness (EEx). Participants were 204 nurses (79 males, and 125 females, average age of 30.84yrs, std.dev. of 4.85), were purposively sampled from a population of tertiary hospitals in Anambra State, Nigeria. Locus of control behaviour questionnaire, emotional expressiveness scale, and marital satisfaction questionnaire were measures. Regression-based, path-analytical statistic was utilized in analysis using Hayes PROCESS macro. SPSS output result revealed that MAS was positively influenced by LOC and EEx, while EEx moderated the relationship between LOC and MAS. Moreso, internal LOC was associated with high MAS for nurses with high and moderate EEx, but not for those with low EEx. The result implies that less EEx is likely to have a decreased disabling influences of internal LOC, thereby contributing to low level MAS. The findings may help improve marital harmony in most families.
