Abstract

Unsafe abortions are still having a high incidence in developing countries. Most women present with bleeding, fever, and pain abdomen. We need to educate masses about its impact. We present the case of a female in her twenties who underwent abortion by an untrained worker in an unsafe environment. Patient had heavy bleeding, fever and decreased urine output with investigations showing leucocytosis, deranged renal function, positive blood culture with uterine perforation. She was successfully managed by intensive care, laparotomy and hysterectomy. Unsafe abortion is a global health problem. Complications of unsafe-abortion are leading cause of maternal mortality. In our case uterine perforation occurred followed by haemorrhage, sepsis and acute renal injury. Patient's condition was timely picked-up and tackled. Quality abortion care is foundational right. It encompasses multiple components: effectiveness, efficiency, accessibility, acceptability, equity and safety. To prevent complications of unsafe-abortions, it should be performed by trained workers in safe environment.
