Abstract

Image enhancement is very essential tool in the field of image processing that aims to improve the image quality. The enhancement of medical images is a challenging research task due to the unchangeable variation in the quality of the captured images. Wireless Capsule Endoscopy (WCE) is a non-invasive device for detection of Gastro Intestinal tract (GI) problems especially for small bowel diseases, such as polyps which causes gastrointestinal bleeding. The Low contrast and low visibility of captured images might influence accuracy of the diagnosis. Global and local enhancement methods are available. These enhancement schemes are used for enhancing an image which includes gray scale manipulation, filtering and Histogram Equalization (HE), Adaptive Histogram Equalization (AHE).Histogram Equalization (HE) has proved to be a simple and effective image contrast enhancement technique. In this paper, the global histogram equalization is improved by using Single Scale Retinex function combined with un sharp masking (SSRUSM).The enhanced image highlights the details and improves the overall contrast, which is helpful for diagnosis. Furthermore, the experimental results of Mean Square Error (MSE), Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) confirm that the error rate in this method is near to the ground and negligible. In compare to state-of-the-art techniques, our method's performances have better visual quality and objective assessments.
