Abstract
The nursing students at Cebu Institute of Technology University have experienced a paradigm shift in education from face-to-face learning to distance online learning due to precautionary measures needed to be implemented by universities to address the risk of contracting COVID-19. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the perceived stress level, identify predominant coping strategies used, and determine the relationship between perceived stress levels and coping strategies utilized among nursing students amidst the pandemic. Method: This study utilized a descriptive-correlational design. Participants of the study were 145 enrolled CIT-U nursing students in the second semester of SY 2020-2021. Spearman’s rho was employed to analyze the association between variables. Result: The study revealed that the perceived stress level among nursing students is moderate and that the predominant coping strategies utilized were the following: positive reinterpretation and growth, religious coping, planning, and active coping, which were shown to lessen stress levels with significantly and low negative correlations. The use of denial, focus on and venting of emotions, behavioral disengagement, and substance use elicit more stress with significantly low and positive correlations. Conclusion: CIT-U nursing students perceived the current situation as controllable and individuals who managed their stress through optimism, faith, planning and taking direct action were able to bear, accept, and resolve every obstacle amidst the ongoing pandemic. The study recommended the emphasis on the four predominantly used coping strategies that were shown to lessen perceived stress levels to address students’ perceived stress awareness during the COVID-19 pandemic.
