Abstract

The study focused on investigating the response of photosynthetic pigments to high temperature (hyperthermia) in two Ophioglossum L. species, namely Ophioglossum petiolatum L. and Ophioglossum coatatum L., found in Rajasthan. The main aim was to understand their varying levels of tolerance to the heat and drought conditions prevailing in the state. Ophioglossum petiolatum is restricted to the Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary and thrives in the damp areas near water streams. In contrast, Ophioglossum coatatum is more widely distributed and can be found growing on both rocks and the moist margins of rivers. After analyzing the photosynthetic pigments in these species at 350C temperature, it was observed that Ophioglossum coatatum, which has a high concentration of photosynthetic pigments and minimal degradation in chlorophyll, demonstrated greater resilience to drought conditions. On the other hand, Ophioglossum petiolatum, with lower levels of photosynthetic pigments, significant degradation in chlorophylls, and reduced carotenoids, was found to be the least resistant to the prevailing conditions. The findings of this study align with the natural survival and growth patterns observed in these species in their respective habitats.
