Abstract
This study determined the relationship between the care provided by staff nurses and the care received by selected patients in the medical and orthopedic units in two hospitals in Cebu City. Through purposive sampling, 70 staff nurses in the medical units and 30 staff nurses in the orthopedic units of Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center and Perpetual Succour Hospital with their respective patients participated in the study. Descriptive correlational design was employed to identify the participants and the association between the care provided by the nurse and the care received by their patients. To measure caring, Caring Factor Survey-Care Provider Version (CFS-CPV) was used for the staff nurses; Caring Factor Survey-Care Recipient Version (CFS-CRV) was used for the patients, but with some modifications. Both have one to seven Likert-type scales with higher scores, indicating a greater sense of caring from the nurses' and patients' perspectives. A 6.17 mean indicates that nurses perceived they are taking good care of their patients; a 5.83 mean suggests that patients perceived their nurses are treating them with love and kindness, despite issues such as lack of human resources and physical stress. The correlation analysis shows a stronger relationship between “Developing helping-trusting relationship with patients and families” and “Creating a healing environment that recognizes the connection between body, spirit, and mind”. In other words, when nurses establish a helping- trusting relationship with their patients, these patients, in return, will feel that they are provided with a healing environment that promotes overall well-being during their stay in the hospital. The care given by nurses and the care received by patients are highly rated, giving emphasis on building trusting relationships and fostering a healing environment to improve care delivery. Based on the results, the following are recommended: a) use both the model care and Caring Factor Survey regularly to address challenges faced by nursing service administrators in the medical and orthopedic units; b) do a similar study in other clinical areas of VSMMC and PSH; and 3) sustain nurses' caring attitude through in-service programs.
