RISK PERCEPTION ON COVID-19 AND PREVENTIVE HEALTH BEHAVIOR AMONG CEBUANOS DURING THE PANDEMIC

Abstract
This research examined the Cebuanos’ level of risk perception towards COVID-19 and its significant correlation with their practice of preventive health behaviors during the pandemic. It also evaluated the relationship of demographic profile to the two variables. Through simple random sampling, 10 of 19 barangays of Minglanilla, Cebu were chosen for data gathering. The municipality has the second-highest number (19%) of COVID-19 cases among the cities and municipalities in Cebu as of June 30, 2020 (DOH Central Visayas, 2020). Krejcie and Morgan’s sample size formula (Krejcie and Morgan, 1970) was used to determine the minimum number of respondents (n=388). This study employed the quantitative descriptive-correlational research design to look into the significant correlation between the respondent’s level of risk perception on COVID-19 and their practice of preventive health behaviors during the pandemic without establishing any causal link (McCombes, 2019). Spearman’s rho and ANOVA were used to analyze association among variables. Cebuanos’ risk perception about COVID-19 has no significant difference in terms of age and gender (n= 388, p≥0.05), but it has a significant difference in terms of educational attainment (n= 388, p≤0.05). The role of gender and educational attainment in predicting Cebuanos’ frequency in practicing preventive health behaviors (n= 388, p≤0.05) was ascertained. A significant positive weak association between the Cebuanos’ level of risk perception towards COVID-19 and their practice of preventive health behaviors during the pandemic (ρ=0.251, p≤0.05) was found. Cebuanos have a high level of risk perception on COVID -19 and preventive health behaviors, specifically females and those with higher education. With a weak but statistically significant positive association on Cebuano’s level of risk perception on COVID-19 and their preventive health behaviors during the pandemic, it is reckoned that when there is an increase in their level of risk perception, there may also be an increase in their preventive health behaviors. Based on the findings, the following are recommended: a) government to exert all efforts to educate people -regardless of age, gender, and education-about COVID -19, and to consistently enforce the mandated health protocols for COVID-19; b) general public to follow these protocols and actively participate in the proper dissemination of information about COVID-19; and c) future researchers may conduct offshoot researches on the improvement of the representativeness of the population to be studied; the relationship between health-related education or occupation and the two variables of this study; and other factors affecting people’s preventive health behaviors.
