Abstract
The aim of the present investigation is to formulate and evaluate the biopharmaceutical behaviors of the matrix patch containing curcumin as a Phytoconstituents with an attempt of use of essential oil as permeation enhancers for transdermal applications by using the Eudragit RL100 and Eudragit RS100 as film forming polymers. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) had employed to study drug and Excipients incompatibility that showed the absence of any type of chemical interaction. Three patches were prepared without penetration enhancer and three patches prepared with penetration enhancer (essential oil). Prepared patches were evaluated for weight variation, thickness, folding endurance, drug content, percentage moisture uptake, moisture loss, and percentage drug release, in vitro and ex vivo drug permeation studies. Skin irritation and anti-inflammatory studies were performed in albino wistar rats. From the studies, it was found that patches having essential oil as penetration enhancer shows better drug release and drug permeation studies. It was found that curcumin anti-inflammatory activity persists in the formulation and shows the equivalent effect to standard and it was concluded that essential oils have shown the potential to reversibly overcome the stratum corneum (SC) barrier to enhance the skin permeation of drugs.
