A STUDY OF CONGENITAL ANOMALIES IN THE NEWBORN IN WESTERN MAHARASHTRA

Abstract
Background: Congenital anomalies are the major cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity,especially in developing countries. Data on these anomalies are still poorly collated in developing countries. We aimed to assess the prevalance, pattern and risk factors and outcome of the neonates born in a tertiary care hospital . Methods : An observational, cross sectional and analytical study was done for all the neonates admitted in postnatal wards over a period of 2 years. Results: 148 out of 1500 congenital anomalies with prevalance of 9.9% out of these 24(16.2%) were minor anomalies, 124(83.8%) were major anomalies. Out of which anomalies involving musculoskeletal system were predominant. Conclusion: The prevalence of congenital anomalies was significantly higher in the current study, with musculoskeletal system anomalies predominance, secondly detailed evaluation was done after identification of one anomaly.The study definitely helps to know the pattern of congenital anomalies and the relationship of various sociodemographic factors in relation to congenital anomalies. Child survival rates and quality of life may be improved with early detection and management.
