Abstract

Introduction: Kutki, also known as Picrorhiza kurroa, is a Scrophulariaceae family herbal medicinal plant native to India's Himalayas. Using a variety of various in vivo and in vitro biochemical tests, we assessed the antioxidant activity of P. kurroa against ethanol-induced oxidative stress in liver slice culture in the current study. Materials and methods: To characterise the lipid peroxidation profile in liver tissue, MDA was determined. Several enzymatic antioxidant parameters, including catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity, were also assessed. Results: The EEPK has shown 86.64 % inhibition of the DPPH radical at 100 µg/ml concentration. The EEPK showed the Frap activity of 768.44±25.16. Ethanol induced oxidative stress by increasing the level of MDA and decreasing the levels of CAT, SOD, GPX, GR & GST. aqueous extract of P. kurroa has reduced the level of MDA & increased the levels of antioxidants. Conclusion: Our study conclusively shown that P. kuroa aqueous extract with significant antioxidant activity was efficient in preventing the harmful effects of ethanol.
