Abstract
Inter-sectorial policies informed by a variety of evidence and knowledge types are the greatest way to assist sustainable development. Given China's growing urbanization, scale, and worldwide importance in climate mitigation, this study examines how evidence is understood and used to guide central and local urban health and sustainability policies. Senior government/scientific personnel who were well-informed were interviewed. Deductive and inductive coding is used to offer a thematic analysis. Participants from government agencies explained the formal remits and processes that determine the scope and use of evidence by various levels of government. When government departments commissioned academic evidence, it had a lot of clout. The use or weight of evidence in policymaking was also influenced by public opinion and economic priorities. The findings of this study reveal that government-produced or commissioned scientific evidence was consistently used to inform urban health and sustainability policy. The use of extensive and routine data collecting to inform cyclical policy processes promotes adaptive capacity. This research adds to our understanding of 'cultures of evidence use.' Increased data sharing and the utilization of a variety of knowledge forms can help to improve environmental governance.
