Abstract

An accident has been defined as “An unexpected, unplanned occurrence which may involve injury” or “unpremeditated event resulting in recognizable damage” or “Occurrence in a sequence of events which usually produces unintended injury, deaths or property damage”.1. To assess the pre test and post test level of knowledge, attitude and practice regarding road traffic accidents among undergraduate students 2. To evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge, attitude and practice regarding road traffic accidents among undergraduate students 3. To correlate the post test level of knowledge, attitude and practice regarding prevention of road traffic accidents among undergraduate students 4. To find the association between the post test level of knowledge, attitude and practice among undergraduate students with selected demographic variable. To assess and evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge, attitude and practice regarding road traffic accidents. The study was conducted in a quantitative research approach with one group pre-test and post-test pre-experimental design in DR.M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute in Chennai for 250 students. Purposive sampling technique was used. The research tool were the demographic variables, Self structured questionnaire for knowledge, Self structured questionnaire 5 Point Likert’s scale for attitude and Self structured questionnaire Likert’s for practice. The study results shows that in pre test level 128(51.2%) had moderately knowledge, 161(64.4%) favourable attitude, and 145(58%) good practice, but after the intervention there was a significant increase in adequate knowledge 213(85.2%), favourable attitude 220(88%) and good practice 229(91.6%). The post-test mean scores showed a positive correlation between knowledge, attitude, and practice, which was statistically significant at p0.05. The study concluded that the structured teaching programme was effective in enhancing knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding road traffic accidents among undergraduate students, demonstrating a positive outcome.
