PERCEPTION OF LEISURE TIME ACTIVITIES AND PSYCHOLOGICAL WELLBEING AMONG HEALTH SCIENCE STUDENTS

Abstract

Background: Leisure time activities are pursuits undertaken during free time for enjoyment, relaxation, and personal fulfillment. Engaging in leisure activities, whether physical, social, or creative, can provide essential mental health benefits, such as reduced stress, enhanced mood, and improved overall well-being. Understanding how these students perceive and utilize their free time can help identify effective strategies to promote psychological health, ultimately supporting their academic success and personal development. Aim and objective: To assess the relationship between perception of leisure time activities and the psychological wellbeing on health science students in Dr.MGR Educational and Research Institute, Chennai. Methodology: A non-experimental Descriptive research design was adopted. The sample size of 282 Health Science Students were selected by probability stratified random sampling technique. The data was collected by rating scale and data analysis was done by descriptive and inferential statistics. Result: Regarding the perception of leisure time activities among Health Science Students, the result revealed that 67(23.75%) had moderate level of perception and 215(76.24%) had good perception level. The psychological well-being on Students showed that 44(15.60%) had poor level of psychological wellbeing, 215(76.24%) had good level of psychological wellbeing and 23(8.15%) had excellent level of psychological wellbeing. The result indicated strong correlation between students with perception of leisure time activities and psychological well-being of r= 0.97. The result revealed that the demographic variable Genderhad shown statistically significant association with perception of leisure time activities among health science students at p0.05 level. It also showed that the demographic variable Department had shown statistically significant association with psychological wellbeing among health science students at p0.05 level. Conclusion: It depicted that students who engage in leisure activities with a positive perception experience higher levels of psychological well-being.
