OPTIMIZING PRIMARY CARE THROUGH LABORATORY, NURSING, HEALTH EDUCATION, AND CLINICAL DIETITIAN COLLABORATION: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Abstract
Primary care is the cornerstone of health systems, serving as the first point of contact and the primary platform for prevention, early diagnosis, and long-term management of chronic illness. In recent decades, the complexity of health needs, driven by demographic shifts, rising rates of non-communicable diseases, and health inequities, has outpaced the capacity of physician-centric models. The emerging paradigm emphasizes interprofessional collaboration, where laboratory services, nursing practice, health education, and clinical dietetics converge to deliver holistic, patient-centered, and preventive care. This review synthesizes global literature highlighting the contributions of each discipline, their synergistic interactions, and their role in reshaping primary care into a system that is proactive rather than reactive. Laboratory medicine improves diagnostic precision and monitoring; nurses enhance care continuity, patient engagement, and chronic disease management; health educators strengthen health literacy and behavioral change; while clinical dietitians deliver nutritional therapy critical for preventing and managing lifestyle-related conditions. Their integration in primary care reduces hospitalizations, improves disease outcomes, lowers costs, and raises patient satisfaction. Despite these benefits, systemic barriers persist, including role ambiguity, inadequate policy support, and fragmented communication. This review argues that the optimization of primary care is contingent upon deliberate investments in team-based models, digital health platforms, and interprofessional education. Such collaboration represents the future of healthcare delivery, capable of meeting the demands of aging populations and the growing global burden of chronic illness.
