Abstract

Background: Latch on is a very essential element in breastfeeding which influences galactopoiesis and newborn sleep behaviour. Aim: This study aimed to find if nursing care bundle is effective in improving latch on and newborn sleep behaviour among primipara mothers. Methods: The study was conducted in Sri Muthukumaran Medical College Hospital and Research Institute, Chikkarayapuram, near Mangadu, Chennai. True experimental pre-test and post-test design was adopted for this study. The study consisted of 68 primipara mothers, 36 in the study group and 32 in the control group allotted by simple random sampling method. Primipara mothers fitting the inclusion criteria were selected for the study. The demographic variables and obstetrical variables were obtained by structured questionnaire, latch on was assessed by using Latch breastfeeding assessment tool and newborn sleep behaviour was assessed by Newborn sleep behaviour assessment scale. The primipara mothers in the study group received nursing care bundle (video assisted teaching and music therapy) from day 1 to 5, the post test being conducted on day 3 and day 5 of the study period. Results: The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference of 4.767 at p0.001level in the post- test 2 level of latch on and of 3.781 at p0.001level in the post-test 2 level of newborn sleep behaviour among the primipara mothers in the study group and control group. There was also a statistically significant correlation found between latch on and newborn sleep behaviour with r=0.467 at p0.01 level in the study group. Conclusion: The study findings concluded that the nursing care bundle significantly improved the level of latch on and newborn sleep behaviour among the primipara mothers. These interventions help in having a positive breastfeeding experience in the mother and also ensures the fulfilment of the newborn’s nutrition needs.
