EFFECT OF CLOSED VERSUS OPEN TRACHEAL SUCTION ON CARDIOPULMONARY FUNCTIONS IN MECHANICALLY VENTILATED ADULT PATIENTS: NURSING PRACTICE.

Abstract
Background: Tracheal suction is a necessary practice to promote airway patency by clearing secretions. Nevertheless, this practice is a crucial nursing skill and is related to further risks. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of closed versus open tracheal suction on cardiopulmonary function in mechanically ventilated adult patients. Methods: A quasi experimental design was utilized. A purposive sample of seventy-two patients was recruited at the intensive care unit of the teaching hospital in the city of Ismailia. The patients were divided into two equal groups, thirty-seven per group: group (1) for whom closed suction was used, and group (2) for whom open suction was used. A single structured tool for the data collection included three parts: demographic attributes, health history, and a hemodynamic parameters sheet to assess cardiopulmonary functions, ventilator mode, and ABG results pre-post suction. Results: The Mean±SD (range) ages of the studied patients were 49 ±6.7 years (20-71) in group I and 47.2 ±7.1 years (21-68) in group II. There was a highly significant difference between the use of closed and open suction systems for cardiopulmonary surgery during and immediately after suction. However, no statistically significant differences were found at the pre-suction phase in either study group. Conclusion: Compared with patients with an open suction system, patients with a closed suction system had improved cardiopulmonary function. Therefore, the use of a closed suction system is an effective practice for controlling cardiopulmonary function instability and promoting healthy well-being in mechanically ventilated adult patients.
