Abstract
Background and Objectives: Like elsewhere in the world, tertiary hospitals in Al Kharj, Saudi Arabia have also reported significant prevalences of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) caused by ESKAPE pathogens. As the scientific world searches back in nature for potential antimicrobials with novel modes of action, the present study explored the bioactive compounds from a notable plant- Valeriana officinalis L. Materials and Methods: Valeriana officinalis stem was methanol-extracted, subjected to phytochemical analyses, TLC (thin layer chromatography), investigations for anti-ESKAPE activities (well-diffusion protocol), MIC and MBC (minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations), MTT assay etc. Results: The extract showed the presence of major phytochemicals with anti-ESKAPE activities. The MICs of the extract were 50 mg (K. pneumoniae), 50 mg (A. baumannii), 100 mg (E. faecalis), 50 mg (P. aeruginosa), 100 mg (S. aureus) and 25 mg (E. coli). The MBCs were also comparatively lower at 25 mg against E. coli and 100 mg each for ESKAPE members. Conclusion: Valeriana officinalis L. possesses potential activities with comparatively lower MIC and MBC against the ESKAPE bacterial pathogens causing HAIs. Thus, we recommend detailed in vivo studies to make use of these phytocompounds in combatting ESKAPE-caused HAIs.
