Abstract

Context 1. Presently, lifestyle choices play a significant role in averting type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome, a notion that has gained widespread recognition. The purpose. Our objective is to implement initiatives that foster a nutritional culture among La Sabana University's adolescents and young adults. The methods employed. The methodology involved measuring the triceps and supraescapular skinfolds, waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), lean mass, and adipose mass subsequent to obtaining the appropriate informed consent. In addition, fasting blood samples were collected for the purpose of quantifying low density lipoprotein (LDL), high density lipoprotein (HDL), and triglycerides. An outcome. 10.3% of the 165 students were found to be underweight, 13.93% were overweight, and 0.6% were obese, according to the findings. In relation to gender, the prevalence of overweight among the male population was 4.8%, while among the female population it was 9%. Among the male population, 3% were underweight, while 7.2% were obese. 30% of the participants had hypercholesterolemia, 18% had hypertriglyceridemia, 17% reported low HDL levels, and 67% reported elevated LDL levels, according to the blood chemistry results. Forty percent of all cases examined are at risk for metabolic syndrome. 60% of respondents stated to engage in no physical activity, with women accounting for 44.70% of the total. In conclusion, Because of these findings, our institution has been able to establish a culture that promotes and encourages healthy behaviours. We have also been able to identify individuals who possess metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes risk factors. Hence, it is critical to engage in cardio-metabolic surveillance and control through the promotion of a healthy diet and regular physical activity.
