Abstract

Situation: The complex and multifarious concept of carer burden encompasses the diverse physical, mental, financial, and social repercussions that may arise when family members provide care for an Alzheimer's patient. Consequently, it is critical to guarantee the well-being of those who are delivering care. Determining the effect of nursing interventions on the care burden of Alzheimer's disease patients was the objective of the study. A quasi-experimental design comprising a pre-test and post-test was employed for this study. Setting: The current inquiry was carried out at Benha University Hospital's Psychiatric Department, Benha Psychiatric Hospital, and the Geriatric Outpatient Clinic of Al Khanka Hospital in Al-Qalubiya Governorate. A convenience sample was utilised, consisting of sixty carers and their family members who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in the designated settings. Utilised instruments in the collection of data: In the course of the investigation, four instruments were utilised. I. To evaluate the sociodemographic attributes of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients and their carers, as well as the carers' professional behaviour, the researcher devised an interview questionnaire. II. The Alzheimer's Disease Expertise Scale (ADK), a diagnostic instrument employed to evaluate the degree of proficiency exhibited by caretakers. IV: ADLs: Activities of Daily Living Assessing the Independence of Patients Using the Katz Index of Independence Scale and III: Applying the Zarit Burden Interviewing (ZBI) questionnaire to evaluate the onerous responsibilities of caretakers. The carers experienced an enhancement in their knowledge and skills subsequent to the session. Following the intervention, there was a noticeable decrease in the overall burden score. As a result, the educational intervention effectively increased the knowledge and skills of carers while decreasing the amount of effort required to complete their tasks. It is recommended that carers of Alzheimer's disease patients participate in educational interventions and routine evaluations at outpatient clinics, in addition to receiving support from social organisations.
