Abstract

This study aims to a follow-up on a previously published work using the same approach, i.e., a simple integrated model, workforce supply/output as density. This basic approach is adopted from the FIP global pharmacy workforce reports. Density is presented as the number of pharmacists per 10,000 population. It takes into consideration population growth as a measure for demand. Due to the limited available data, a simple supply rather than supply and demand model was chosen. Included in the data set were the following: the overall number of pharmacists, the number of pharmacists from Saudi Arabia, the number of pharmacists from other countries, the gender breakdown of the pharmacy workforce, and breakdowns by area, industry, and country. The quantity of pharmacy schools, the number of students enrolled in pharmacy programmes, and the number of graduates are all pieces of information that were gathered. the government has begun to phase out local pharmacies on government property in favour of Wasanty, an electronic prescribing service that connects health centres with community pharmacies. This move will guarantee that only licenced and qualified pharmacists provide pharmaceutical services. There is still a great deal of regional variation in the distribution of the labour. While the number of female chemists has grown in the last five years, it is still significantly lower than the global average. Even if the percentage of Saudi pharmacists has nearly quadrupled in the past five years, the country still lacks a legislative framework to encourage the localization of its pharmacists, particularly given the consistently high number of Saudi pharmacy graduates.
